From 1989 to 1999 Mattel started releasing the Hot
Wheels with a Collector Number. They started with
Collector Number 1 and ended in 1999 with Collector
Number 1121. Now there is a lot of confusion due to
some Collector Numbers never being used and other
Collector Numbers being used more than once. Also there
was no set method as to what year the Collector Numbers
were released. And some Collector Numbers were
re-released thru-out the '90s over and over! Also some of
these Collector Numbers were used prior to 1989 as you
will see or already know, but it seems that everyone
likes to use 1989 as the start of this new system. There
have been lots of different ways trying to explain the
release of the Mainline Hot Wheels from 1989 to 1999,
but remember this; There is no hard set rules for the
Hot Wheels with Collector Numbers 1 thru 1121.

In 1996 we still have confusion from Mattel. But good
news still trumps the bad. The debut of First Editions
and the Holy Grail of First Editions the "VW DRAG
BUS", this vehicle has been an instant hit with
Collectors ever since. But First Editions also used a
Collector Number that was already released. # 382 the
1970 Dodge Daytona Charger. # 369 was also used
twice, both First Editions, Road Rocket & Turbo Flame
(which also was called Sizzlers). And other Collector
Numbers never being used. Baffling to say the least.

Most of the 1996 Vehicles have Collector Numbers from
365 to 505. However as you will see a lot of Collector
Numbers were NEVER used and their were plenty of
Re-Released Vehicles, with a lot of China vehicles from
the 1980s and early 1990s just to confuse you more!

- The debut of First Editions had just 12 vehicles.
Spread out from Collector Numbers 367 to 382. As you
can see they were NOT released in numbered order of
the First Edition! And some of the Collector Numbers
were not even used. And # 382 was used twice! But it
was # 372 that everybody wanted, the heaviest Hot
Wheel ever made, the Customized VW Drag Bus! YES!

- Sub-Series continued and had 12 series with 4 vehicles
each. Collector Numbers 380 to 427, these were
numbered in sequence order with the Collector Numbers,
love it. However as mentioned above # 382 was used for
two different vehicles!

- Treasure Hunts had 12 Vehicles numbered from 428 to
439 in order! See how nice it is when things a numbered
properly.

- Re-Paints and or Re-Releases were spread out with
Collector Numbers as low as 5 all the way to 591.  But a
total of 12 Numbers NOT being used and 1 Number being
released during another year. Oh and 1 vehicle has never
actually shown up, even though it is on some checklist.

- Also some vehicles were Re-Released during 1996, we
have confirmed 20 Vehicles.

- Wheels introduced in 1996 were the LW or Lace Wire
Wheel, the SB or DW known as the Saw Blade Wheel or
Directional Wheel and the 5Ho or 5Dot know as the 5
Hole Wheel or 5 Dots Wheel.
